چکیده

In this paper we develop a new proposal for distance-based penalty scaling in Optimality-theoretic analyses, including Harmonic Grammar. We apply this technique to the analysis of two phonological phenomena, both of which have posed challenges to implementation using standard constraint-based methods: directionality effects and bounded domain windows. We show that distance-based penalty scaling handles both effects in a straightforward and unified manner. Directionality effects, in particular, are widely acknowledged as challenging for surface-oriented constraint-based models (see e.g. Zoll (1997); Hansson (2001); McCarthy (2003); Bakovic & Rose (2014), among many others). Cases covered by our analysis include both unidirectional harmonies and stress assignment patterns, as well as more complex cases of ‘opposite-edge’ effects, in which two competing directionality effects co-exist. We show that the same scaling functions which offer a solution to directionality effects can be readily applied to model window effects (e.g., Kager (2012)), in which phonotactic constraints apply in only one portion of a domain.

Scaling trends of power noise in 3-D ICs

Power supply noise in three-dimensional integrated circuits (3-D ICs) considering scaled CMOS and through silicon via (TSV) technologies is the focus of this paper. A TSV and inductance aware cell-based 3-D power network model is proposed and evaluated. Constant TSV aspect ratio and constant TSV area penalty scaling, as two scenarios of TSV technology scaling, are discussed. A comparison of pow...

Segmentation Similarity and Agreement

We propose a new segmentation evaluation metric, called segmentation similarity (S), that quantifies the similarity between two segmentations as the proportion of boundaries that are not transformed when comparing them using edit distance, essentially using edit distance as a penalty function and scaling penalties by segmentation size. We propose several adapted inter-annotator agreement coeffi...

On the Use of Microarchitecture-Driven Dynamic Voltage Scaling

This paper proposes microarchitecture-driven dynamic voltage scaling as a viable solution to power efficient architectures, with little or no performance penalty. The run-time behavior exhibited by common applications, with active periods, alternated with stall periods due to cache misses, is exploited to reduce the dynamic component of power consumption via selective voltage scaling. As it is ...

Regulation of Electrical Distribution Companies via Efficiency Assessments and Reward-Penalty Scheme

Improving performance of electrical distribution companies, as the natural monopoly entities in electric industry, has always been one of the main concerns of the regulators. In this paper, a new incentive regulatory scheme is proposed to improve the performances of electrical distribution companies. The proposed scheme utilizes several efficiency assessments and a 3-dimentional reward-penalty ...
